Plant Characteristics:

Flowers: Bi-colored pink and white, often with unique patterns. Some petals may have more white, while others have more pink, making each bloom slightly different.

Leaves: Small, evergreen, slightly leathery, with a mix of green and reddish tones, especially in cooler weather.

Growth Habit: Compact, bushy, with fine branching—ideal for bonsai styling.

Growing Conditions:

Light: Prefers partial shade to bright indirect sunlight. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves.

Soil: Acidic, well-draining soil. Azaleas thrive in mixes with peat, pumice, and akadama (for bonsai).

Watering: Requires consistent moisture but should not sit in waterlogged soil. Prefers rainwater or slightly acidic water.

Humidity: Likes moderate to high humidity, making it great for a greenhouse or outdoor shaded area.

As a Bonsai:

Pruning: Regular pruning after flowering encourages compact growth and more buds for next season.

Wiring: Can be wired, but branches can be brittle, so gentle techniques are best.

Repotting: Every 2–3 years with fresh, well-draining soil.

Caring for azalea bonsai

Azaleas love water. Water until water comes out of the drainage holes in the bottom. In between these waterings, only moisten the surface of the plant to hydrate the fine roots without saturating middle-to-bottom portion of the container to avoid water-related issues.

Good to know: Flower rot can be catastrophic to the floral display of your azalea. Keeping the foliage and flowers dry when watering is a great way to prevent this from occurring.

Sun exposure

In Spring and Autumn, azalea bonsai benefit from full sun to create strong flower buds with tight internodes and to build up the kind of resources that continue to perpetuate the species’ iconic floral display.

As a bonsai, azalea has some of the greatest capacity to grow in partial, or even full shade in some varieties and cultivars. The larger the leaf and overall size of the Satsuki azalea bonsai, the more heat they can tolerate.
