Cedrus deodara — commonly known as Deodar cedar or Himalayan cedar, and Indian cedar — is a majestic evergreen conifer native to the Western Himalayas, particularly in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nepal.

🌿 Botanical Features

Needles: Soft, bluish-green to gray-green, 2.5–5 cm long, in clusters.

Cones: Barrel-shaped, 7–12 cm long, upright on branches (typical of true cedars).

Bark: Gray and fissured with age.

Form: Gracefully drooping branches with a pyramidal crown.

Cultural/Religious:

Regarded as a sacred tree in India.

“Deodar” comes from Sanskrit devadāru, meaning "wood of the gods."

 Medicinal:

Oil extracted from the wood is used in Ayurvedic treatments for skin conditions and as an antiseptic.

🌍 Ecological Importance

Native deodar forests are crucial habitats for Himalayan wildlife.

Their deep root systems help prevent soil erosion in mountainous areas.
