The Japanese Elm is a hardy, deciduous species prized in bonsai for its elegant branching, small serrated leaves, and naturally refined silhouette. Its adaptability and vigor make it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced bonsai artists.


🌳 Features:

Leaf Type: Small, ovate, finely serrated; lush green in spring/summer, turning golden in autumn.

Growth Habit: Upright with graceful taper and excellent ramification potential.

Bark: Smooth and grayish when young; matures into attractive, flaky texture.

Trunk Development: Thickens well with age, suitable for creating a powerful base (nebari).

🪴 Care Instructions:

Light: Full sun to partial shade. Protect from harsh afternoon sun in very hot climates.

Watering: Keep evenly moist but not soggy. Water thoroughly when the topsoil begins to dry.

Humidity: Appreciates moderate humidity, especially indoors or in dry environments.

Fertilizing: Apply balanced fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during growing season.

Pruning: Regular pruning encourages fine ramification; structural pruning in early spring or late fall.

Wiring: Wire young branches in spring; check regularly to prevent wire scars.

Repotting: Every 2–3 years in spring before bud burst; reduce root mass carefully.

Can tolerate frost but should be protected from freezing winds. Suitable for overwintering in unheated cold frames.
